Drawing Classes

at Firesign Studio on Quadra Island

Dates are to be decided-let me know if you are interested!

What makes some drawings attractive and others rather awkward? Why are some pencil marks blunt and amateurish and others refined and professional? The quality of a pencil line is as important as the quality of ingredients in a gourmet recipe.

This course will give you the knowledge and confidence to get command of the pencil as well as several other drawing tools. You will learn to visualize so you can draw quickly, without hesitation, to avoid endless erasing. Once you improve your drawing skill, you will create better works in painting, sculpture or whatever medium you choose.

We start by developing your line quality and handling skills with the pencil. Pencil drawing can be a rehearsal for a painting so it is important to be able to use it like a brush or a pen. It can be used strictly for lines, or for applying tone. It can be smudged to act like a wash or to fill flat areas with feathered edges.

Materials:

Sketch Book (good quality paper, price is usually a guide, should be acid free, about 9” x 12”)

Mechanical pencil (HB or B lead, any gauge is fine, .05, 07, 09 are all available)

Wooden pencils (HB, B, 2B, one harder pencil such as H or 2H and any others of your choice)

Graphite stick (HB or B, even 2B is good)

Optional drawing Tools (Conte Stick, Charcoal pencil or stick, Carbon Pencil)

Paper stump (you can make these yourself or buy them. Its just a piece of paper rolled tightly to about the diameter of a pencil and shaped using sandpaper. They are used to smudge and become well seasoned after much use so they can actually apply tone from their blackened tip.)

Sundry Items (kneaded eraser, plastic eraser, paper towel, utility knife only if you need to sharpen wooden pencils manually, masking tape.)
