Strengthen Your Visual Sensitivity and
Creative Visual Language

with Michael Orwick

This workshop is designed to explore the fundamental reasons behind a painting's success.

Think of walking into a gallery and instantly being grabbed by a painting from clear across the room.  What is it that reaches out to you and pulls you to get a better look? Learn what it is that first draws you and how the painting continues to cast such a spell that you have to get within sniffing distance to learn all you can.

Through informative conversations and step-by-step demonstrations students will gain an understanding of the interrelated components of painting, including value, shape, color and edge relationship. You'll be painting right alongside Michael Orwick with time for each student to receive personal attention and friendly critiques.

Michael will discuss the benefits and drawbacks of photo references. The instructor will provide some reference material and students should bring landscape photos from home which they would like to work on. Michael will emphasize emotion, color and composition, and how to make a photo into a spirited painting.

Starting with composition, emphasis will be placed on strengthening students' skills of editing and selection as well as clarifying light effects for more powerful, personal design.  Study the power and importance of balance, unity, variety, interest and contrast through the tonal and color aspects of your paintings.

Students will learn about mixing colors from a limited palette, while still achieving dynamic light and shadow effects with lively color. Discover how values and temperature work to keep your paintings in harmony.

Take home your own light filled masterpiece along with improved painting methods and theory.

Bonus; Get ready for painting outdoors with a Plein-air equipment overview and suggestions list.

Artist's Statement:

Starting with weekend life drawing, then on to oil, watercolour, ink and more - thirty years have gone by and the pull is stronger than ever for me. I am fascinated with dimensions - how can I manipulate the mat opening or canvas dimension to create a second layer, or third, or more? I have never much been bothered about WHAT I paint - more about how. I am in love with the gentle elegance of watercolour, yet also drawn to the rich colour and texture of acrylic. The longer I paint - the more I discover to learn.

Profile:

Born in London, Ontario, Timms, an army brat, moved around Canada until settling in Vancouver, BC, then finally in Courtenay Vancouver Island. For more than thirty years, Marilyn Timms has been perfecting her ability to draw and paint. Workshops and seminars over the years with numerous painters have helped her move forward in this process, of course, but in the main she considers herself self-taught. After many years of life drawing, she found her passion for painting with traditional oils on canvas. As fate would have it, a severe allergy to the binders used in oils forced her to look at other mediums, including the new acrylic paint, pastels and finally, watercolors. A weekend workshop in watercolor technique was all it took and, soon, she was winning awards. Feeling the urge to work a new medium again, Timms turned a second time to acrylic paint and found a second, award-winning love.

Awards:

  • Timms has been awarded the Barse Miller Memorial Award at the American Watercolor Society's
136th Annual International Exhibition in 2003 in New York City, NY, USA. (See below)
  • She has had her paintings accepted into the Societe Canadienne de l'Aquarelle Annual Watercolor Exhibition, Brossard, Quebec, Canada in 2002
  • the Canadian Society for Painters in Watercolors OPEN WATER Juried ExhibitionToronto, Ontario, Canada in 2000 and more.
  • She exhibits mostly in Western Canada, although her credits include
a solo exhibition in the South of France as well.

Timms was awarded full signature membership in the
Federation of Canadian Artists in 1993 and maintains this status.

In 2005, Timms attained full signature membership in the Society of Canadian Artists, Toronto, Ontario.
