Broaden Your Colour Horizons
A 5-Day Painting Workshop

Working the Booms
with
Marjorie Turnbull
October 18-23, 2010
Colour is often the first thing that catches your eye in a painting. In
this class we will explore colour, the relationship of colours, one to
each other, its temperature and value. Using colour, we will try to
paint the ordinary in an extra-ordinary way.
There are three things that you see when you
look at a painting – Colour, Image and Composition. Colour is one
of the first things that catch your eye, so let’s talk colour and paint!
Marjorie will talk about different colour
relationships, their temperatures, and how they mix. She will also
explain and demonstrate Low and High Key paintings.
Colour can be wonderful, but sometime it can be
very frustrating. Why didn’t a particular colour work? What colour
should I use? Marjorie will start each session with a short lecture,
and demo demonstrate with a small painting. Students may work on some
slightly larger pieces outdoors, if the weather permits. All this will
lead up to a larger painting, using all the information learned during
the workshop.
Marjorie is very good at working with students and
seeing where they are and where they need to go. She will demonstrate
in oil and acrylic, but any medium with colour may be used.

Here is a brief
course outline:
Each
day will start with a lecture and a demo and then the class will paint.
The four combinations that we will work on are very basic, but give a
good understanding of how colours work together. If the weather is
good, it would be nice to have some time outdoors.
Day One
– we will work with one set of Complementary colours, keeping in
mind High Key and Low Key values.
(It’s Pure Sunshine, Geraniums in a Ginger Jar and Tea for Two)
Day Two
– we will paint with Analogous colours and one complement.
(Working the Booms, A Wonderful Evening for a Walk and Jam Jars)
Day Three
– today will be Triads. They will give us more combinations to
work with, but won’t stretch our imaginations quite as much as the
previous days.
(Ginger Jar, Sahar’s Basket and Another Lady Slipper )
Days Four and Five
– we will put everything together and work on the last
combination – a Dominant Hue. At this point, it would be good to work
on a larger painting.
(Patsy’s Pitcher, Maligne Lake and Duck Meadow.)
**White is always included in each
day's combination.
